Lighting mast and pole covers, anti-vandal and anti-theft
Metpress designed, developed and manufactures the METCOV, a patented lighting cover being installed on South Africa’s national roads to stop the damage and theft of lighting infrastructure.
Each cover is made from the highest quality material in Metpress’ internationally certified manufacturing facility. That combination keeps the cover from being damaged or stolen, and with it the electricity, the cable and the components behind the pole door.

The problem METCOV solves
Utilities across South Africa face the theft and vandalism of their infrastructure, and the theft of electricity from it once a pole is opened. It is no fault of the utility, but it remains the utility’s legal, regulatory and fiduciary duty to secure its installations against three things.
Death or injury
Members of the public, or the utility’s own people, exposed to live connections.
Streets left dark
More vehicle accidents and more crime when street lights are out at night.
Electricity stolen
Lost sales from electricity taken through vandalised infrastructure.
The legal and regulatory side
The General Machinery Regulations of the Occupational Health and Safety Act require every exposed and dangerous part of an installation within normal reach to be effectively safeguarded. A utility that does not secure its installations is in contravention, with serious consequences for its legally appointed responsible person.
A damaged or stolen installation also puts the utility’s NRS 047 (quality of service) and NRS 048 (quality of supply) obligations at risk.

Many covers have been tried over the years. They proved costly, ineffective and unsustainable.

The proven solution
Metpress spent several years developing and perfecting a pole cover that is near impossible to steal or vandalise. The design is patented.
Key features
- The anchoring member, the cover member and purpose-designed stainless steel bolts stop the cover being pulled away from the pole.
- Precisely positioned lugs stop it sliding sideways.
- The tool-engageable head and sleeves make it near impossible to open with pliers, spanners or the like.
- The T-bar and two-legged floating spring mechanism make installation quick and easy.
Made from the toughest material, the METCOV stops the cover itself being stolen, and with it the theft of electricity, the circuit breaker, the cable and the other components inside the pole.
Proven in the field
The METCOV was extensively tested in the field by the electrical utilities of City Power in Johannesburg and eThekwini in Durban, and has proven to prevent both theft and vandalism.
